Alpha channel

An alpha channel is an 8-bit (256 level) transparency channel on an image. They are used to "cut out" the parts of an image you are interested in, like the irregularly-shaped label on a beer bottle, or for putting one image over another while allowing background details to show through. Only certain image formats support a true alpha channel, most famously PNG, TIFF and TGA.
