HDRI is the abbreviation for High Dynamic Range Image, and is used for scene lighting in combination with radiosity. High Dynamic Range Images contains more than just 32 bits of colour information (which means 8 bits per channel, R G B, plus alpha channel); they also contain a channel in which exposure data (or in other words brightness information) is stored.
