Contents

Main

  • Parent - The hierarchical Parent of the current item(s).
  • Target - The item towards which the current item will point its Z-axis.

IK

  • Unaffected by IK of descendents - if this is on, the IK motion of the children of the current item(s) will not affect this item.
  • IK goal - The End Effector of an IK chain, basically a item that the IK chain which has the current item within it will try to reach for.
  • Goal strength - How hard the current item tries to reach for its IK goal.
  • Match Goal Orientation - Aligns the item with it's IK goal. Useful for feet which have to lie flat on the ground.
  • Keep goal within reach - Limits the goal object so that it cannot go further than the length of the IK chain.
  • Full time IK - If on, then IK is calculated all the time, if off, IK is only calculated when the goal is moved by the user, and the user will need to set Keyframes on the IK chain to keep a pose obtained using IK.

Channel Controllers and Limits

This tab has options for controlling how an item's rotation channels may be set.

  • Align to Path Look-ahead - How far forward in time to see where the item will be next.
  • Max Steps
  • Reliable Distance
  • Controller - This can be one of the following:
    • Keyframes - Keys set by the user.
    • IK - IK controls the rotation channel.
    • Target - The channel will be used to try to point the current item's Z-axis towards the Target item. This is not available for Bank as that rotates around the item's Z-axis.
    • Align to Velocity - The channel will be used to try to point the item's z-axis towards the direction the object is moving.
    • Align to Path - The channel will be used to try to point the item's z-axis towards a point ahead of it on its Motion Path. This gives better results than Align to Velocity at points where the item comes to a complete stop such as the end of the item's motion.
  • Minimum Limit - The minimum angle the item can be rotated to with respect to its Parent coordinate system.
  • Maximum Limit - The maximum angle the item can be rotated to with respect to its Parent coordinate system.
  • Stiffness - if the item is in an IK chain, this determines how easy the item bends with respect to other items in the chain.

If Minimum/Maximum values are set, and the Rotate Tool is selected, the coloured ring of the tool handle will be 'filled' beyond these limiting values, thus giving a visual indication of how far a joint can rotate.
