Radiosity is specifically the transport of light from lightsources, bouncing off diffuse surfaces and illuminating the scene in a realistic manner. LightWave 9.2 has upgraded radiosity that is easily fast enough for animation work. Interestingly, the origin for radiosity was not for high-quality computer-generated graphics, but to study radiative heat transfer problems.
