Ray Tracing
From LightWiki
Oddly reviving Empedocles' original theories of the way we see (that we "cast" rays of light from our eyes to illuminate objects, etc.), ray tracing in 3D applications is based on the idea that the camera actually casts out rays of light to create pixels in the final image. Once the rays hit the scene they can be further traced to calculate shadows, refractions and reflections.
